Mobile Media Trend:

Mobile media seems to be the buzzword these days. The ever-increasing number of mobile users, the explosive growth of mobile based services, the increasing interest shown by businesses in mobile marketing, and the endless array of features offered by the latest smartphones has made many people believe that they are witnessing the birth of a mobile revolution.

Mobile Media – The Current State

The mobile phone is no longer considered just a tool for communication. We use it to check email, listen to the radio, watch TV, browse the web, play games, shop online, and many, many more. So, everyone – right from small retailers to multi-billion dollar corporations – is of the opinion that the mobile phone is the best tool to communicate with the end user.

Let us now take a look at the applications that have made mobile media a hot and happening thing today.

It all started with ringtones. Monophonic ringtones were followed by polyphonic ringtones, which were followed by master tones or real-music tones created from a snippet of a song. Now, real-music tones, which could be a song, a TV show or movie theme, or any other type of music, have become the norm.

This is undoubtedly one of the most favorite mobile media applications of people around the globe. Mobile phones these days support a wide range of formats like WMA, MP3, M4A, and M4P and allow people to download their favorite songs from websites. Networks like AT&T and Alltel Wireless have also launched their own mobile music service that allows customers to download and listen to their favorite songs.

Mobile TV allows people to watch sports, news, and entertainment on the go. Operators like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and Alltel offer mobile TV service to their customers. The customers can watch a variety of channels right on their mobile phone by paying a monthly subscription fee.

The introduction of mobile web is one of the main reasons behind the explosive growth of mobile media. People are now able to post pictures and videos online, update their blogs, stay connected with their friends on social networks, and browse the web for information using their mobile phone.

The mobile phone today is seen by many as the perfect tool for targeted advertising. Businesses use services like SMS, MMS, Bluetooth, mobile video, mobile web, mobile games, and mobile apps to serve targeted ads to their customers. Mobile marketing is already a billion-dollar industry and is expected to grow even bigger in the next few years.

Mobile Media – A Look at the Future

Services like mobile music and TV are expected to gain popularity among users, particularly among young people. Technologies like Wi-Fi and WiMAX are likely to fuel the growth of mobile web not just in the US, but also in various countries around the globe. Mobile virtual network operators like Blyk that offer ad-supported mobile services are expected to grow bigger.

Mobile marketing is expected to become a multi-billion dollar industry in the near future. People are expected to become less reliable on traditional media like newspapers and more reliable on mobile media. Already, the Associated Press has launched its own mobile portal. More companies are expected to follow suit.

Based on what we have seen so far, it can be safely assumed that the mobile phone today is what the internet was in the 90s. The mobile phone will soon become an all-purpose device that will help people watch TV, read books, listen to music, read newspapers, enjoy movies, connect with friends, get information, buy stuff, and many, many more. So, it is suffice to say that the future of mobile media is very bright.
