Reasons why a Sitemap is Necessary for Your Website

A sitemap is a document or webpage that contains a list of links to all the sections of your website. It is built into a website to improve user experience and for search engine optimization purposes. Let us see why it is considered an important part of any well designed, content rich website.

There are three reasons why a sitemap is considered important for a website.

1.It makes it extremely easy for visitors to navigate a website. If you have a website with hundreds of pages, visitors might find it difficult to move from one section to another. They might even get lost while looking for some specific information on your website. If your site has a map or table of contents, visitors can easily find what they are looking for without any difficulty.

2.A sitemap contains a link to every section on your website. When a crawler bot visits the map, it usually follows every single link on it and indexes all the pages on your website quickly. Without a map, pages that can be accessed only after two or three clicks from the home page might take months to get indexed. In some cases, they might not get indexed at all as crawler bots usually do not index pages that are buried too deep.

3.It gives visitors a clear idea of what your website is all about. One look at the names of the sections mentioned in the sitemap and visitors can easily understand the ‘essence’ of your site. It is a real timesaver. If people had to click on link after link to find a particular piece of information, they might get annoyed and might not return to your website at all. So, a clear, comprehensive sitemap makes it easier for visitors to find the information they want instantly.

If you need a map for your website, you have two choices – you can either choose to create one by coding manually or choose to create one instantly using a map generator. The former, though a relatively simple task, requires a little HTML knowledge. The latter, however, is an extremely simple task that requires no technical knowledge whatsoever. You can get it done by using free online map generators that are available in many websites.

An important thing you need to remember while generating a sitemap is that it should not contain more than 100 links. Google does not follow maps that contain more than 100 links on a single page. So, if your map is large, it is advisable to break it up into separate pages. It makes it easier for Google to index all the pages in your website.
